SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN
Your cabinet boxes are probably fine. It is the honey oak finish from the 1990s that dates the whole kitchen. We spray cabinets to a smooth, furniture-grade finish for a fraction of what replacement costs, in days instead of weeks.
Family-owned and based here in Shelby Township. Free written proposals, always.
Doors and drawer fronts come off and get sprayed, which is what makes the finish look like furniture.
Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease. Paint does not stick to grease, so this step is never skipped.
We count your doors and drawers, check the existing finish, and hand you the number in writing.
WHY THIS KEEPS COMING UP
Shelby Township filled in between the 1980s and the 2000s. Drive the subdivisions off 23 Mile or Ryan and the same story repeats: two-story colonials and brick ranches, three-car garages, and kitchens built when honey oak was the default.
Those cabinets were built well. The boxes are solid, the hinges still work, and the layout is fine. What dates the kitchen is the color and the sheen, not the carpentry.
Newer homes bring the opposite problem. Builder-grade maple or thermofoil in a 2000s kitchen looks flat, and a sprayed finish changes the room without touching the footprint.
WHAT DRIVES THE PRICE
Quotes in Macomb County vary more than homeowners expect, and the ranges published online are close to useless. We have seen local sources quote anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over $6,000 for a "full kitchen," which tells you the term means nothing on its own.
The price follows your door and drawer count, not the square footage of the room. A galley kitchen with 18 doors and six drawers is a different job from an L-shaped kitchen with an island, 34 doors, and a pantry.
Every door is cleaned, sanded, primed, and sprayed on both sides. That is where the labor goes.
Previously painted is simple. Heavy poly over oak needs harder prep. Laminate needs a bonding primer or it will not hold.
Oak grain telegraphs through paint. Filling it for a smooth look is real added labor, and skipping it is why some painted oak still looks like oak.
Boxes and shelf interiors add labor, and plenty of homeowners skip them. Dark-to-white takes more coats than white-to-greige.
We will not quote your kitchen off a phone call. We come look, count the doors, and put it in writing.
OUR PROCESS
01
We check the boxes for damage, test the existing finish, and count everything. Then you get a written proposal with what is and is not included.
02
Floors, counters, and appliances get covered. Cabinet interiors get masked if they are not being painted.
03
Everything is labeled so it goes back exactly where it came from. Hardware comes off, not taped around.
04
Years of cooking grease come off before any abrasive touches the surface. This is the step cheap jobs skip.
05
The primer for raw oak is not the primer for laminate. If grain is getting filled, it happens here.
06
Doors and fronts get sprayed, and coats get real dry time. Rushing this is why some painted cabinets chip at the handles.
07
Doors and hardware go back on, and we walk the kitchen with you before calling it finished.
STRAIGHT ANSWERS
Painting works when the boxes are sound. It is not a fix for everything, and we would rather tell you before you hire us.
Swollen particleboard. Once a dishwasher leak gets into particleboard it never recovers, and paint will not save it.
Delaminating doors or racked frames. You would be putting a nice finish on carpentry that is coming apart.
A layout you dislike. Painting keeps the layout. If the island is wrong, paint will not fix it.
You want a different wood grain. Painted is painted. If you want natural white oak, this is not that.
QUESTIONS WE GET
Plan on several days for a typical kitchen, longer for large kitchens or heavy color changes. The doors are off for most of that. You keep your counters and appliances, so most families cook through it with some inconvenience.
Yes, but it is an additional step and it belongs in the proposal. Oak grain shows through paint unless it is filled and sanded first. If someone quotes glass-smooth painted oak with no grain filling in the scope, ask how they plan to get there.
Only if you want them done. Many homeowners paint what shows and leave interiors as they are, which lowers the cost. We price it either way so you can decide.
Doors and drawer fronts get sprayed. That is what produces the smooth, even finish people are paying for. Frames mounted to the wall get sprayed when overspray can be contained properly.
Not if they are prepped and cured correctly. Chipping at the pulls almost always traces to grease that was never cleaned off, or hardware reinstalled before the finish cured. Both are process problems.
Yes. We have sent a paint consultant out to help homeowners choose, and cabinets are where that help matters most. Cabinet color reads differently than a wall color in the same room.
We are based in Shelby Township and paint cabinets across Macomb County. If you want a real number for your kitchen, we will come count the doors, look at the finish you have, and put it in writing.
